Maastricht University (UM)
Problem-based learning (PBL) has been in the DNA of the School of Business and Economics (SBE) since its start 40 years ago. In this teaching method, students work in small groups of 15 students under the guidance of a tutor, looking for solutions to problems themselves. As a lecturer/tutor, you will be guiding students in a wide range of introductory courses in marketing, organisation, global business, accounting and finance, with an emphasis on courses in the bachelor programme International Business. You guide the tutorial groups, ensure participation of all members, and monitor the depth and breadth of the content discussed. You do this in an enthusiastic and inspiring way, stimulating the academic and professional development of students.
Next to your work as a tutor, you will be asked to engage in other teaching tasks, including grading of exams/assignments and BSc thesis supervision and/or assessment. In addition, you may be asked to contribute to recruitment events of SBE. Outside of regular teaching periods, we will offer you the possibility to participate in activities (e.g., educational research, policy development, administrative work) that suit your needs and future plans.
SBE Teacher Academy
The SBE Teacher Academy will consist of a team of colleagues with a passion for education in the business and economics domains. We think of members of the SBE Teacher Academy as generalists who are interested in international business in the broad sense, rather than specialists in one specific field of expertise. You will gain teaching expertise in different domains, and collaborate with academic staff members from multiple departments. SBE’s Learning Academy will offer coaching and organise activities that will contribute to your professional development.
Tutor training in PBL
To properly prepare you for the role of tutor, we offer you a multi-day tutor training in PBL. The PBL & Tutor Training provides all new staff members with knowledge about PBL and the role of the tutor. After having followed this training, you will understand and be able to apply the pedagogical principles behind PBL, you will be able to effectively guide small tutorial groups towards self-directed learning and deal with challenging situations in the tutorial group setting, and you will have learned to provide effective feedback to students. These are skills that you will also benefit from in future jobs outside the education domain.
