We seek a PhD candidate to join our team at the MERLN Institute for Technology-inspired Regenerative Medicine, Maastricht University in the Netherlands to work on a European Research Council – Consolidator grant project NEPHRON (Nurturing Environment – BioPrinting Human Renal OrganNetworks).
The PhD candidate will perform cutting-edge research in methods applied to the development of in vitro models, and more specifically bioprinting approaches for the creation of in vitro renal models. PhD candidates will perform their research in an intellectually vibrant and multi-disciplinary environment.

The MERLN institute (https://merlninstitute.com/) focuses on developing novel and challenging technologies to advance the field of tissue and organ repair and regeneration through, amongst others, the development of high-throughput material platforms to screen cell-biomaterial interactions. MERLN consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers including fields as (stem cell) biology, materials engineering, chemistry, micro/nanofabrication, additive manufacturing, etc. The scientists at MERLN have an extensive network of collaborators within research institutions in and outside the Netherlands as well as with a number of biomedical companies, including their own spin-off companies, as entrepreneurship is highly fostered.
Requirements
- Master’s degree with excellent grades from previous studies and courses along with experience in one or more of the relevant fields (e.g., Biofabrication, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or equivalent title). Candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree in a country where it is common to directly enter a PhD programme (e.g., the USA) are welcome to apply without a master’s degree but must demonstrate substantial independent research experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are mandatory.
- Knowledge of Dutch is not required.
Key expertise
- Experience in the fields of biofabrication, in vitro model development, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
- Experience with Bioprinting, bioinks preparation and characterization.
- Cell culture expertise and relevant assays.
- Knowledge and experience with microscopy, image processing and analysis.
What we offer
As PhD candidate `part of ERC CoG project NEPHRON` at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:
- Position in a research institute with cutting-edge biofabrication technologies such as bioprinting and a multitude of additive manufacturing technologies.
- Interdisciplinary position in an international environment within MERLN.
- Good employment conditions. The position is graded according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary from €2901,00 in the first year and €3707,00 gross per month in the fourth year (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
- An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1.0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.
- At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

Applying from abroad?
For those unfamiliar with the Dutch PhD system, it is standard to dedicate four years to completing laboratory work for the degree and for submitting a thesis comprising several experimental chapters, often including published research papers. The program is a full-time research degree, with coursework being optional.
